New Forage Varieties: Webinar March 23
Update: Missed the webinar? Find the recording and check for future webinars on our Webinars page.
Current competition for land from other crops is putting further pressure on the forage industry to increase margins or be converted into a more profitable commodity. This makes forage breeding a key piece to the long term health of the beef industry.
The forage breeding program at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre is aimed at improvement of crops such as alfalfa, sainfoin, cicer milkvetch, orchardgrass, and giant wildrye. Researchers have developed adapted perennial forage cultivars of these crops along with an annual legume ‘fenugreek’ and appropriate agronomic packages for optimizing forage and seed production. They have also collaborated with other North American researchers to explore other uses for these crops.
Join this free webinar to learn more about the success stories of some of these crops, consequent impacts, and how you can utilize them on your operation.

Speaker
Dr. Surya Acharya, Ph.D – Research scientist, forage breeder, at and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, AB.
Dr. Acharya has developed and commercialized high yielding disease resistant cultivars of traditional forages such as alfalfa, cicer milkvetch, orchardgrass and sainfoin. He has also developed and commercialized the first North American cultivars of perennial cereal rye and forage fenugreek along with many native Alberta grass cultivars. In recent years he has developed a sainfoin cultivar AAC Mountainview that can be used for bloat prevention in alfalfa pasture, in addition to an acid tolerant (AAC Meadowview) and a saline tolerant (AC Bridgeview) alfalfa for western Canada.
Dr. Acharya has earned National and International awards, positions in Scientific Societies and has served on Editorial Boards of International Journals. For his research contributions on traditional and non-traditional crops he received the “Breeder of the Year Award” in 2012 by Canadian Seed Trade Association and Canadian Seed Grower’s Association. He has received Fellowship Awards from the International College of Nutrition (ICN) and the Canadian Society of Agronomy and other international and national awards including the Key to the City of Lethbridge.
