Free webinar: The inside scoop on Foot and Mouth Disease for veterinary professionals

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a serious issue for Canadian beef producers as it poses a real biosecurity threat that can cause significant economic losses. The BCRC recognizes veterinary teams are on the front lines protecting those herds.

This webinar will highlight the role of veterinary teams in recognizing the signs of Foot and Mouth Disease and minimizing risks to Canadian beef cattle producers. This webinar is geared towards veterinary teams to discuss the who, what, where and why of FMD and what they can do to decrease the impact on beef cattle operations they work with, and the industry as a whole. A continuing education credit is available for this webinar.

Dr. Geneviève Toupin, DVM, National Veterinary Program Manager – Canadian Food Inspection Agency 

Dr. Geneviève Toupin graduated from the Université de Montréal Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Saint-Hyacinthe in 1997. She worked in private practice for nearly 10 years before joining the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in 2006. She rose through the ranks from district veterinarian to national operation specialist and now as national veterinary program manager for ruminants and swine. She has built solid experience as a technical advisor, has been part of numerous emergency preparedness groups and has been involved in multiple responses to disease outbreaks. Since March 25, 2024, Dr. Toupin is leading the team developing the response plan for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle.

Dr. Murray Gillies grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Sussex, New Brunswick. He studied animal science with a focus on agriculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College before completing his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island. After graduating, he spent two years in New Zealand in a dairy-focused clinic before moving back to New Brunswick, where he worked for the Government of New Brunswick for five years in large animal practice. In September 2018, he joined the veterinary pharmaceutical company Vetoquinol as a technical services veterinarian, where he worked for four and a half years. He is the current coordinator of the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS), a division of Animal Health Canada. He is a past president of the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians and the current District 12 director for the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. He is currently working on a master’s degree in health management and public health at the Atlantic Veterinary College with a project focusing on antimicrobial use on dairy farms. He was the dairy subject matter expert for the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Stewardship of Antimicrobial Use by Veterinarians Initiative (SAVI) in 2018 and 2022. Dr. Gillies remains very active in the day-to-day operations of his dairy farm, where they have implemented many of the SAVI recommendations and guidelines successfully, including zero-zero calf care, selective dry cow therapy and following the prudent use guidelines for treatments when necessary.
